Description: Vildagliptin (trade name Galvus) is a prescription drug that is used to treat type 2 diabetes. It works by blocking an enzyme called DPP-IV. When this happens, less glucose gets released after eating. By reducing the amount of glucose getting out of the bloodstream, it helps keep blood sugar at normal levels. Metformin lowers blood sugar levels by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver. Metformin reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver by inhibiting gluconeogenesis. Inhibition of gluconeogenesis means that fewer nutrients are converted into glucose, therefore reducing the amount of glucose in the blood.
