Description: Obeticholic acid (OCA) is a synthetic derivative of the natural hormone, chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA). OCA works by binding to the same receptors as CDCA but does not produce the same side effects. In addition, OCA is much less toxic than CDCA. OCA is an FDA-approved drug that has been shown to improve PBC symptoms in patients who have failed ursodiol treatment.
